44% of Twitter accounts have never sent a single tweet, says report

A new report claims that nearly half of Twitter's 974 million accounts have never tweeted.

According to Twopcharts, 44% of accounts on the microblogging site have yet to publish a single tweet.

The Twitter monitoring website worked out the figure by tracking whether an account has tweeted or retweeted, as it is unable to find out when an account has been logged into.

Just 13% of accounts have written at least 100 tweets, while the report estimates that 542.1 million accounts have sent at least one tweet since signing up.

Twitter has claimed that it had 241 million monthly active users in the final three months of 2013, which it defines as users who login but do not necessarily tweet.

Reasons for accounts that don't tweet include shy users who may simply want to read what others post, in addition to those who have signed up and not returned. There can also be false accounts and internet bots.
