Captain Scarlet actor Francis Matthews dies, aged 86

Francis Matthews has died at the age of 86.

The actor was famous for voicing Captain Scarlet in the 1960s science-fiction series Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons.

Matthews was also known for playing the title role in Paul Temple, the BBC series about an amateur detective which aired between 1969 and 1971.

During his career, which began in the 1950s, Matthews appeared in several Hammer Horror films, includingDracula: Prince of Darkness andRasputin, The Mad Monk.


He also starred opposite Morecambe and Wise in The Intelligence Men andThat Riviera Touch and presentedFollow Me!, a BBC educational programme for those learning the English language.

Matthews married actress Angela Browne in 1963, who died in 2001. He is survived by their three sons, Damien, Paul and Dominic.
