What is Hyperlapse? Instagram's new app explained

Time lapse photography is something that has been around for a long time. Traditionally however it requires you to have a tripod and the ability to stand still for hours on end.
Now, however, things have changed thanks to Instagram and its clever Hyperlapse app. The application lets you capture time lapse videos while you walk about, using a clever algorithm that will stitch all the images together and remove as much judder as possible.

Unlike Instagram, which is a social network, Hyperlapse is more of a photographic tool. Videos can of course be shared to Instagram, but Hyperlapse exists as a separate application altogether.

Using the app is easy. It's simply a case of opening it up and then hitting the big record button at the bottom of the application.

Instagram has kept things as simple as possible, so other than a tap to focus function, the app does little else in terms of letting you tweak exposure or apply filters.

One tap of the record button will start your Hyperlapse, while another will stop it. The best videos tend to be the ones that incorporate movement, as the impressive time lapse effect gets exaggerated.

Once you have captured your video, the application will let you tweak the speed at which the time lapse runs. You can run it all the way up to 12x speed should you desire.

Then finally hitting the big tick button in the top right will save the photo to your iPhone's camera roll. Hyperlapse will also offer up the ability to share videos directly to Instagram or Facebook.

For those who fancy giving Hyperlapse a go, you can download it now from iTunes.
