Apple officially announces the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3

Apple has officially announced the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3.

The new flagship tablet is powered by the company's 64-bit A8X processor, and is even thinner than its predecessor.

The iPad Air 2 measures in at 6.1mm, making it the thinnest tablet on the market, and comes with an enhanced Retina display with anti-reflective coating.

The larger tablet includes an 8-megapixel iSight camera on the rear, bolstered by the image signal processing capabilities of the A8X chip.

It offers a range of new camera features, including 1080p recording, TimeLapse, Burst Mode, slow motion video and more.

Sporting a largely unchanged form factor, the devices both includes a FaceTime HD camera and Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the front. Apple accidentally leaked the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 a day early in an update of its own iOS 8 user guide manual, but full specs details have only now been confirmed.

The company was tipped to debut a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro alongside its latest tablets, but this did not materialise at the event.

The iPad Mini 3 WiFi model will be available from £319, running up to £579 for the top tier 128GB model.

Pre-orders on both tablets will start tomorrow (Friday, October 17).
