Radio 1 told off by Ofcom for Lily Allen's f-bombs at Big Weekend

The BBC has said that it was a mistake to broadcast an expletive-filled Lily Allen gig live on Radio 1.

Lily Allen said "f**k" six times during the station's Big Weekend concert, which aired in the early evening, while Ed Sheeran also swore.

In its latest fortnightly Broadcast Bulletin, media regulator Ofcom stated that the show breached broadcasting regulations, despite several warnings and apologies from Radio 1 at the time.

The gig was aired between 5.30pm and 6.15pm on May 24.

Before the gig, presenter Scott Mills told listeners: "Now, don't forget this set may contain some strong language, it is live on Radio 1's Big Weekend.

"We're about to see Lily Allen. If you're easily offended, please go to the website and check out some other performance."

Ofcom received three complaints about the show, prompting the BBC to admit that they should have cancelled showing the gig live after she swore during her second song, and "only broadcast the remainder of her performance once it had been edited".

The BBC explained that it considered cutting away twice, but a senior producer decided to continue the broadcast, as few children were likely to be listening.

However, it said that it took offensive language "extremely seriously", but that there was a "strong argument for providing listeners unable to attend in person with the opportunity to enjoy an 'as-live' atmosphere that mirrored the experience of actually being at the event as closely as possible".

Ofcom said that Radio 1 needed a "careful balance" between freedom of expression and offensive content, and that Lily Allen was "well known" for her use of strong language.

Responding to the adjudication, a BBC spokesperson told Digital Spy: "We note the findings of Ofcom and the Trust; we have examined our procedures and tightened them accordingly."

Meanwhile, BBC Three has also been reprimanded for including several uses of "bitch" in the Ludacris song 'Move Bitch' in World's Craziest Fools.
