Today, March 21, the Sweet Spot -- 17806 Detroit Ave., Lakewood -- will host its annual Free Scoops Day. Yes, to celebrate spring, but also to raise awareness and donations for World Down Syndrome Day.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- First came the idea: Celebrate the first day of spring by offering a free scoop of ice cream to patrons. Then came the realization: There is no sure sign of spring in Cleveland.
Just look at all the snow out there.
Well, the Sweet Spot made a slight change to the plan and everyone is happy - no matter what the weather looks like.
Today, March 21, the charming Gelateria -- 17806 Detroit Ave., Lakewood -- will host its annual Free Scoops Day. Yes, to celebrate spring, but also to raise awareness and donations for World Down Syndrome Day.
"We started doing this in 2012 for the first day of spring," says Sweet Spot co-owner Becky Blau. "But then we figured why not do some a little more meaningful and raise some money for Down Syndrome."
Patrons will get their first scoop free, but are encouraged to make donations to Gigi's Playhouse Cleveland. Located down Detroit Avenue in Lakewood, GiGi's Playhouse offers more than 30 therapeutic and educational programs to people with Down Syndrome.
You have to pay for subsequent scoops - and you might be tempted at Sweet Spot, which specializes in "American gelato." The style is made with more milk and less cream so there are fewer calories and includes flavors that hit the spot - like The Lemon Ginger or the Beeramisu.
