18th September is National Respect Day

In September of 2008, the Family Violence Prevention Fund (now Futures Without Violence) partnered with Macy's for the first National RESPECT! Day. Which is a very laudable aim. and of course is a movement developed in the USA, but maybe we should ask ourselves why we need to identify a 'day of respect' when respect should be a 'human given'

The sad fact is that in so many quarters 'respect' is not just lacking but totally absent!

Think about the aggressive posturing of our world leaders; the prejudiced rhetoric of fundamentalists and the day to daily disrespect we see in social media. So maybe we shouldn't need reminding, but it seems that we do.

The Man who spread falsehoods.
Once upon a time, an old man spread rumors that his neighbor was a thief. As a result, the young man was arrested.

Days later the young man was proven innocent.

After being released, the man felt humiliated as he walked to his home. He sued the old man for wrongly Accusing him.

In court, the old man told the Judge, “They were just comments, didn’t Harm anyone..”

The judge, before passing sentence on the case, told the old man, “Write All the things you said about him on a piece of paper. Cut them up and On the way home, throw the pieces of paper out. Tomorrow, come back to Hear the sentence”.

The next day, the judge told the old man, “Before receiving the Sentence, you will have to go out and gather all the pieces of paper That you threw out yesterday”.

The old man said, “I can’t do that! The wind must have spreads them and I won’t Know where to find them”.

The judge then replied, “The same way, simple comments may destroy the honor of a man to such an extent that one is not able to fix it. The old man realized his mistake and asked for forgiveness”

Ways to Show Respect for others

Listen -  When you give another person your time and your focus and your ear, you validate them. Which conveys respect.
Affirm - You may not respect every aspect of who they are and what they do, but you can give them appropriate respect at the level that affirms them. Affirmation is a key way of showing respect to others

Service - Serving shows that we care. And caring shows that we respect. Serving is an important element in showing respect.

Kindness - Kindness is an expression of respect. Respect for the fact that someone else is simply in need. We have all been in need. And what a relief it was when someone showed us kindness. Kindness is a tangible way of showing respect.

Be Polite - We are witnessing a decline of politeness in the modern world. Whether it’s on the highway, at the grocery store, in the parking lot, on the athletic field, on Facebook, or in political rhetoric – polite discourse and interaction is rapidly becoming a lost art.

Be Thankful - The psychologist William James was right, that human beings crave appreciation, then thankfulness is the way we affirm it
