The Pool Academy School Logo

Pool Academy is a mixed secondary school with academy status, located in Pool in the English county of Cornwall.
Pool School has gone through many name changes, Pool Comprehensive, Pool County, Pool Secondary until it became Pool School & Community College in 1992 under the leadership of Dr Patrick Hazlewood. After Dr Hazlewood left in 1996 Mr David Howley (former deputy headteacher) took up the post. Mrs Liz Terry became headteacher in 1998, Mr John Oddy (also a former deputy) took over in 2000. In 2002 Mrs Zelma Hill was appointed. The school renamed as Pool Business and Enterprise College around 2006 and became Pool Academy in 2011. In 2017 Mrs Hill retired and Miss Claire Meakin became principal

As a former student of the school (David left in 2000) he saw that not only had the school got renamed the logos has evolved. Even David has evolved as you can see. In records that David has recalled these are the known logos of the school since its creation.

The earliest logo on record

The logo that was in use when David attended created by former teacher Peter Lyon
The logo first used when the school first gained Academy Status

David recently spoke to Phil Jones Head of Academy Services who explained the recent change to the logo yet again. Here is what he had to say.

"I started to look at the logo and branding of the school as a whole earlier this year. Over time the previous logo had been used in many different ways- different shades of yellow/orange, different fonts etc. As such around the school looked a bit messy. It was also a bit difficult to use on things like websites as it was quite complicated and intricate.

We also wanted to underline all the changes that had taken place in school over the last few years. A new principal and largely a new senior team, a new internal structure, some new facilities like the art gallery etc. So we worked with a local designer to see the best way we could re brand the school. It was felt important that we retain some elements of the original logo, as we were still very much proud of the school's history. So the design we settled on is a kind of 'stripped back' version of the original- keeping the Celtic cross outline and a simpler Cornish black and gold colour scheme. We've worked to replace it in as many places as possible but this will take time- we wouldn't want people to have to buy new uniform for example".

Many thanks to Phil for explaining the change and so without further ado here is the new logo.

Do you like the design? Or do you like any of the originals, feel free to comment.

Now this image is David now, 19 years after leaving Pool, he is 36 at the time of writing. We caught up with David to ask him what he thinks of the new logo.

"I generally agree the logo is fresh and clean looking, the history in the school is so great and I am pleased to see it going strength to strength".
