Social Media for Radio Part Two

Fusing On-Air and Online

Your on-air and online presences need to be one and the same. There is a school of thought that says, “I don’t want to talk too much about the web on the air because I might drive listeners away from our air signal….that translates to lower ratings.” That’s B.S. (Bad Science).

Some PDs do. You need to promote your online presence on the air as if it were an integral part of who you are as a Radio station. And your online presence needs to drive listenership on the air as well. The whole is truly greater than the sum of the parts.

  • Every on-air contest has an online component: Qualify to win by being the 9th caller or by answering a trivia question on the website or Facebook page
  • Tweet your requests and we will mention your Twitter name on the air when the song is played
  • Answer our morning show question-of-the-day on Facebook
  • Online streaming on website and/or Facebook
  • If you have a mobile app, mention it on the air and enter everyone who downloads it in your current online contest. If you don’t have one, GET one
  • Use your website address and your QR code on everything…remote vehicles, event posters, bumper stickers, even station personnel clothin
