Moments in Time: Camborne driver nominated for best bus driver in the country

GinoA CAMBORNE-based bus driver has been nominated for a bus industry “Oscar” just a few months after winning another award for his exemplary customer care. Gino Contrino is now in line for the UK Bus Awards’ Chris Moyes Memorial Award for the Top National Bus Driver.
According to First Devon & Cornwall, Gino, 54, has maintained an excellent customer service record during the 26 years that he has been a bus driver in the area.
This is borne out by the many letters of commendation from the public as well as many other awards, his bosses said.
The latest of Gino’s accolades was the Above and Beyond Award for customer care for people with learning disabilities given by local charity, People First Quality Checkers.
He also won a FirstGroup 2009 Regional Superstar employer award for which he nominated by 26 separate customers.
In Gino’s award nomination, Robbie Lamerton, First Devon & Cornwall’s general manager, says: “Gino has a track record of being one of our best drivers in the region for customer service. Further to that, he is just a good natured and friendly person all year round who enjoys bringing a smile to his customers’ journeys.”
Nick Semmens, team leader at the Camborne Depot, added: “Gino is a credit to the bus industry and performs his duties to the highest level. He is one of our best drivers in Cornwall and has excellent customer service skills. He would be very deserving of the title Top National Bus Driver.”
Gino will find out later this month if he has won the national bus driver “Oscar” at the UK Bus Awards’ presentation ceremony taking place at the London Hilton Hotel on November 19.
