My review of 'The Good Doctor' as an adult with autism

Image
This blog is by Kerry Magro, an award-winning international motivational  speaker  and best-selling author who’s on the autism spectrum. A version of this blog originally appeared on  Kerrymagro.com . Full disclosure: After only watching one episode, I have no idea what the future is for “ The Good Doctor “ (which premiered Sep. 25,2017 at 10/9C on ABC). What I can tell you: this show has all the makings of an ABC smash hit. Let’s begin with the cast. Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) stars as Dr. Shaun Murphy, an up-and-coming surgeon who also happens to have autism and savant syndrome. This is a very difficult role for anyone to play given how broad the autism spectrum truly is. Some criticism has occurred as many TV productions and films try to address autism issues. There is no “one size fits all” in attempting to define characters on the spectrum. This list in recent years includes characters such as Walter Hill in Joyful Noi...

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 17: The Wonder of Silence

Image
The disease of anger needs the medicine of tolerance; the pain of disappointment needs the medicine of hope; the violence of revenge and spite needs forgiveness; fear needs courage, ego needs self-respect. Through inner silence we receive the strength to heal.

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 16: Enjoy Everything You Do

Image
Most of our time goes into pleasing others and making them happy. Often despite our best efforts we find that people do not appreciate what we have done. When we have tried hard to please someone we feel disheartened and upset. Whatever I do is for myself. When I recognize this fact, I will never do anything just to please others. When I am content with the effort I put in, I will never be dependent on others’ recognition of what I have done. When I enjoy everything I do, I will be truly happy. The more content I am, the more others will start appreciating my effort.

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 15: Original Peace

Image
It is not necessary to search for peace. It is within. Your original state is one of peace. External situations will pull you away from your peace. If, that is, you let them. Internal feelings can also pull you away. Tiredness, for example, leads to irritability. Learn to be in charge of yourself and maintain your peace: centre your awareness on your spiritual form – a tiny star-like point of light, seated in the middle of your forehead. Really experience the difference between You the Sparkling Star, and your body, the physical vehicle. Learn to detach yourself from the vehicle. Even a few moments of this practice, if done regularly, will return you to your natural state of peace. Tiredness will vanish. Irritability too. And your actions will be filled with love – for the self and others.

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 14: Being Comes Before Doing

Image
People spend most of their lives running after things, doing things. They forget that being comes before doing. Those who remember this secret make an effort to “be” and discover that when they stop and observe, life helps and brings whatever is needed. Learning to be is learning to be at peace. It is our most fundamental nature. Share

The difference between most people and successful people

Sometimes you have to see it before it's real…  I'm sure someone has told you your plan won’t work or maybe they think you are crazy because you believe in your dreams. First of all ignore them...  Second, continue to... SEE IT BELIEVE IT PLAN IT ACT ON IT It's not enough to day dream… you have to act to make your day dream a reality. When you start stepping towards your goals your goals start stepping towards you. If you are trying to take your business or career to the next level and it's not going according to plan that doesn't mean you should give up, maybe it's time to try a different strategy to shake things up. Once you have the goal in mind… test a few different options, measure the results  and double down on what's working. You can achieve your goals , but you have to be smart about it. It won’t be easy but it’s possible!  That's all for now… I believe in you  KEEP GOING MY FRIEND YOU GOT THIS  💪 REGA...

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 13: Changing Times

Image
It is wise to bend rather than to break. Those who change will get spiritual wisdom. Conversely, those who have wisdom will decide to change. Change is the first law of Nature. In fact, change is the mark of Time.

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 12: Remaining Focused

Image
Many of us have the tendency to postpone even the most important things to the last moment. We assume we will be able to get things done later. But sometimes the unexpected intervenes and everything collapses under the added strain. When I remain focused I am able to prioritise. I understand that small tasks can be as important as the larger ones and I make sure I get them done at the right time. I make sure I leave time for the unexpected too. This lifts the pressure and allows me to give my best in every situation.

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 11: Trust In Others

Image
Trust in others wins co-operation from them. To have faith in others also means reinforcing other people’s faith in themselves. This naturally increases their self-confidence and creates enthusiasm. Then they become better able to respond to positive feelings and access their full potential. If I notice someone I work with is not cooperating with me I need to check my own faith in that person. When I am able to appreciate them for their own unique qualities, my faith in that person will grow.

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 10: Pure Peace

Image
Why do we find it hard to be at peace with ourselves, each other and the world? Imagine a lake that is flat and calm and pure – it is so clear you can see the bottom. Even when the wind blows it only ruffles the surface. All is still and peaceful in its depth. Then the first polluting chemicals of the new factory and farm come rolling down the hill and into the water. Immediately it starts to cloud over and bubble a little. Chemical reactions are taking place and the purity is lost. When purity is lost peace is lost. It is the same with human consciousness. We are innately peaceful beings. Peace is our deepest inner state of being, our true nature. To be at peace is to be in our natural state, but only when our consciousness is pure and clean and true. As soon as the pollutants of any negative images are allowed in, or we allow old memories and experiences to disturb us into negative thinking, our purity and therefore our inner peace are gone. It’s not the external event or pe...
