How to Build Mental Toughness in Your 20s (or 80s)- A Psychologist’s Letter to His 22-Year-Old Self

Image
Photo by Quinten de Graaf on Unsplash In case it wasn’t obvious from the title, I’m writing an imaginary letter to my 22-year-old self about what I wished I had done at an earlier age to build mental toughness and emotional resilience. And while I think these tips are exceptionally beneficial at a young age, I also think they’re evergreen — useful no matter what decade of your life you find yourself in. Dear Nick, Believe it or not, turns out you become a psychologist and therapist (Sorry, the NFL never called back). As someone who spends all day talking to people about their struggles, one thing you quickly learn is that eventually everybody has stressful, sometimes tragic, things happen to them: The love of their life is unfaithful. They get fired from their dream job. They start having debilitating panic attacks out of the blue. A close friend is killed tragically. Stress, challenge, pain, and tragedy are inevitable, in one form or another. But th...

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 5: All Will Be Well

Amidst the earthquakes of unexpected situations, the hurricanes of unreasonable behaviour, when fortune strikes against me, I will remain unmoved, knowing that finally all will be well.

Johnson hails ‘new beginning’ as UK counts down to Brexit

Image
Britons counted down the hours Friday to their country’s departure from the European Union — some joyous, some sad, many just hopeful the divorce would mark the end an anguished chapter in their country’s history. The U.K. officially departs the EU at 11 p.m. local time, midnight in Brussels. The departure comes 3½ years after the country voted by a margin of 52%-48% to walk away from the club that it had joined in 1973. Throughout the day, small bands of ardent Brexit backers gathered outside Parliament in London to celebrate. Nearby, pro-Europeans waving the bloc’s blue and yellow flag came to commiserate. Whether Brexit makes Britain a proud nation that has reclaimed its sovereignty, or a diminished presence in Europe and the world, will be debated for years to come. The now 27-member EU will have to bounce back from one of its biggest setbacks in its 62-year history to confront an ever more complicated world as its former member becomes a competitor, just across the En...

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 4: Open Heart

Image
The heart is like a flower – unless it is open it cannot release its fragrance into the world. The fragrance of the heart is made up of the qualities and virtues of our spirit. Most of us have learned how to keep our heart closed in a world that would trample all over us if we let it. Being open hearted today seems to require tremendous courage. It is a courage which comes only when we realise that no one can hurt us, no matter what they say or do. They may hurt our body, but if we have realised we are spirit, nothing outside can touch us, if we so decide. Little by little, practice opening your heart to those you think have hurt you. Realise it wasn’t them that hurt you, it was yourself. And it taught you not to trust and you closed your heart. A closed heart is in need of opening. And when you do, you will have begun to heal yourself.

Thought of the Day 2020 Day 3: Life Can Begin To Flow

Image
As we grow in strength in our spiritual life, we give up the habit of worrying. It serves no purpose other than to make us feel tense and miserable. When I stop fretting about things that are beyond my control and focus instead on generating optimistic and kind thoughts, my life can begin to flow in ever more positive directions. Such a light and easy approach to life enables me to take everything in my stride.

Time for Change in 2020

Image
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to affect, but actually, from a non-linier, non subjective point of view it is more like a big ball of wibbily wobbly timey wimey...stuff It's the year 2020 a whole new decade, a whole new year with that comes minor changes to the blog that you have supported since day one one in 2012. The key word here is TIME . What's time to do with inspiration and wisdom? I hear you ask, well truth be told that might be covered in later blogs. I write this as I only little time before the scheduled time that I want it posted it by, is that a big hint what I am getting at? No? Okay the short matter is I am now posting at a more convenient time for the time zone I am now in which Eastern Time USA, I now hear why? the simple answer is that it's more easier to work around then my home time zone when I used to be in England. The blogs will continue to be the same but just at different times. Happy New Year everyone
