First to run Truro park and ride service

Bus operator First South West will run the Truro park and ride service from September, it has been announced. The Langarth to city centre service, currently operated by Western Greyhound, began in 2008, carrying about two million passengers in the last five years. The service is used by commuters, shoppers and visitors, taking an estimated 550 vehicles off the roads around the city centre each day. First was awarded the five-year contract by Cornwall Council following a tender process after the initial five-year deal expired.
The company will begin running the service from Monday, September 2. Managing director for First South West Alex Carter said: “First is thrilled to win the tender to operate the Truro park and ride service. We will ensure that the high standards of service are maintained and we will work with the Council to enhance the service.” Cornwall Council’s head of transportation Nigel Blackler said: “Western Greyhound has set a high standard for the city’s park and ride service. “This is down to the company’s dedicated and hard-working staff who have made the service the success it has      “We look forward to working with First who came to us with a number of exciting proposals to further enhance the service over the next five years.” Western Greyhound staff currently working on the Truro park and ride service will be given the opportunity to continue working for the service by transferring across to First South West or remaining with Western Greyhound. Western Greyhound’s managing director Mark Howarth said: “We were delighted to be entrusted by Cornwall Council to introduce the service five years ago. “We have worked hard to build the Truro park and ride to the high standard of customer satisfaction that it now enjoys, and look forward to seeing it grow from strength to strength in the future.” Truro park and ride will continue to operate between Langarth Park and Victoria Square from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday.
