Festivities got underway as Doctor Who actor Barrowman joined comedian Karen Dunbar to celebrate the culture and history of Scotland in a musical number.

Barrowman's routine was also noteworthy for a moment in which he kissed another man, in stark defiance of more than 40 of the competing countries having laws against homosexuality.

"I'm proud to say welcome to Scotland, welcome to Glasgow, welcome to the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games," McGregor told viewers.

The Scottish Regiment Pipe Band soon arrived in Celtic Park, as Boyle led the crowd in a sing-along version of the classic Wings hit 'Mull of Kintyre' during a flyover by the Red Arrows.
