The Jungle Book. Beauty and the Beast. Disney is on a streak of remakes of its own classic animations, and they're not planning on slowing down.
The company has just announced that it will be making a new "reimagining" of The Lion King, set to be directed by The Jungle Book's Jon Favreau. Yes, really.
Disney has not specified whether it will be animated, though following The Jungle Book's CGI, it wouldn't be surprising if this new take on the Lion King story followed similar lines.
And yes, the movie will also include songs from the original animation.
Circle of Life
Of course, we know that The Jungle Book remake was a big success for Disney, grossing $965.8 million worldwide and gaining rave reviews, so a Lion King remake sounds unsurprising… but still baffling given the original's widespread success and popularity.
The company is also due to release a remake of Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, and in recent years has drawn upon its previous stories with a live-action version of Cinderella and Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie as Sleeping Beauty's nemesis.
They will also be releasing a sequel to their Jungle Book remake, too.
The Lion King was released in 1994 and grossed $968.8 million worldwide. It also won two Oscars, and has been turned into a stage musical.
The story focuses on lion cub Simba, who is exiled after the death of his king and father Mufasa and must return to reclaim his kingdom from his evil uncle Scar.
No release date has been given for Disney's "reimagining" of The Lion King.
